About Project Lingxi

Founded in 2023 by Emily Jin, a researcher, writer, and translator, and Sharon Liu, a curator and researcher, both based in New York. This unit develops writings and exhibition projects centered on the theme of translating Asia and translation in Asia. The project name Lingxi derives from a Chinese legend in A Garden of Marvels, a Southern Song folklore collection by Liu Jingshu, which describes a rhinoceros horn with spiritual powers capable of transcending the boundaries of worlds. The rhinoceros horn has since become a metaphor for mutual understanding or the connection of minds

Emily X. Jin

Emily is a researcher, writer, and translator. She investigates how translation, both as a practice and as a symbol for communication and border-crossing, manifests itself through academic theorization and artistic representations. Her recent translations have been published in The Way Spring Arrives and Other Stories (2022) and Liu Cixin’s collection A View From the Stars (2024). She has also written as a columnist for the magazine Sixth Tone. Emily obtained her bachelor’s degree in Comparative Literature and Psychology from Wellesley College and is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University.

Sharon is a curator, researcher, and the upcoming Asymmetry Curatorial Fellow at SculptureCenter (New York). Her recent exhibitions include Open Admissions: Michael Rakowitz and Early Amherst College Collections (Mead Art Museum, 2025), Laborious Hands (Amherst College Library, 2024-25), and Retrieving and Revitalizing (Tokyo YAU Studio, 2023).
